General Information
Colorado liquor licenses are issued by two licensing authorities: the State of Colorado Liquor Enforcement and the City or County jurisdiction where the establishment is located. If the establishment is within a city jurisdiction (e.g. Salida, Buena Vista or Poncha Springs), contact the appropriate City Clerk’s Office. If the establishment is outside city limits, contact the Chaffee County Clerk’s Office. Licenses may take several months to acquire and, therefore, one must begin the licensing process months in advance of the opening date.
Colorado liquor and beer licenses may be issued in the name of natural persons, corporations, partnerships, and limited liability companies. Applicants and other persons involved with partnerships, corporations or limited liability companies must be at least 21 years of age.
All limited liability companies and corporations (including foreign corporations and LLCs) are required to be registered with the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office and authorized to do business in Colorado.
Applicants do not have to be a United States citizen or a Colorado resident to acquire a liquor license.
Renewal of an Existing Liquor License
Liquor licenses expire one year from the date of initial license issuance and must be renewed annually. Liquor license holders should receive a renewal notice from the Colorado Liquor Enforcement Division, by mail, at least 60-90 days prior to the expiration date of their existing license. If the license holder does not receive the renewal application, contact the Colorado Liquor Enforcement Division.
Complete the renewal application, updating any changes on the renewal application.
If an establishment is leased, the lease must be valid for at least one year from the date the license is renewed. If the licensee’s lease has been extended or modified in any way from the lease currently on file with the clerk’s office, a copy of the new lease needs to be included with the renewal application.
It is the license holder’s responsibility to submit this application to the County Clerk’s Office at least 45 days prior to the expiration date. The appropriate fees, both county and state, should be included with the application at the time of submittal.
Once the application is processed by both the county and the state, a County and State license will be sent to the license holder.
